The Game - activated by your brain, Emotiv is coming!

I’m sure you remember the Star Trek

TNG episode in which Wesley is the only person not to be seduced by a game that operates via brain waves?

Well, it’s coming along sooner than you’d think! To wit:

The next video game controller you use might be between your ears. A start-up company called Emotiv Systems has developed a helmet-like headset that, it says, lets users control game characters with their thoughts.

The device looks like something used for heavy-duty orthodontics, and it comes with receptors that read activity among the brain’s neurons. The player then teaches the device’s software to associate thought patterns with commands. According to the game news blog Kotaku, which got an early look, players could push and pull an object by willing it so or scare spirits away with a grimace.

Due out this year, Emotiv’s device offers one of the more far-out views of what the future of the gaming industry could look like….MORE….

Now if that isn’t just plain cool, I don’t know what is.

Adidas goes high luxury with Ostrich skin sneakers, crackled leather and …

I suppose it’s of paramount importance

in today’s world of one’s upmanship no matter what the cost. After all, if you have the cutting edge of iPhones and iPods and designer jets and the like, how COULD you appear in the gym wearing, well, common ordinary sneakers?

The brilliant folks at Adidas have heard your cries! Reported by Haute Concept, check out this update:

For spring/summer 08, Adidas will be dropping a luxury collection of kicks that feature premium materials and classy looking colourways. The Tobacco will be the first to drop in March, followed in May by the release of the Campus Vintage, Italia 1960 and Rod Laver Vintage. Each sneaker brings a subtle touch of class to the floor, for example, the Tobacco uses laser treated crackled leather, whilst the Campus Vintage is particularly interesting due to the woven uppers that use a combination of suede and patent leather….MORE….

Enhanced iPhone 512 Terabyte with a head touch - put 10,000 songs on your iPhone

So appropriate for Friday!

But if you really want to put 10,000 songs on your iPhone, check this out:

I bought an iPhone and I’m pretty happy with it but there’s one problem: it’s too small to hold my entire iTunes library. I’m already using my Mac as a web server and I’m usually home or somewhere with wireless access so I figured ot a way to have all of my songs available to me at all times. I don’t have much time right this second to give a lot of detail so I’ll give a quick overview of what I’m doing and flesh it out later. .

This is pretty simple if you’re already familiar with running a PHP-enabled web server on your Mac. Standard disclaimers apply: if you get your machine hacked because you’re running a public websever, or if the RIAA learns that you’ve got all your music in a world-viewable directory, or if your ISP cuts you off for doing this, it’s not my fault.

Even if you don’t have a world-accessible server, you can still use this to make your music available on your wireless LAN at home or work. Just go to your computer’s LAN IP address instead of a regular URL. (Note that iPhones won’t recognize Rendezvous/Bonjour names. I think. I haven’t actually tested, but I haven’t heard that they do.) (Update: I was right, the iPhone didn’t come with Rendezvous/BonjourZeroConf of any sort, but that has been added in the 1.1.1 update. I don’t know if it’s in iPod touch’s or not; if it isn’t, I’m sure it will be soon. This also means that trailing slashes (see below) aren’t essential when browsing on your local network; however, they’re still needed from the outside world and are a good thing to do in general.)

Basically, all I’m doing is making the iTunes music directory available to the web server….MORE….

Blended Perfection - put your computer on your coffeecup

Now, anything that deals with coffee

is newsworthy. But coffee as a Good Thing with your computer? Tell me MORE!

Check it out!

Coffee PCCalled the Yuno PC, it’s a personal computer concept that would allow you to let you display your email, weather, traffic conditions, and other important criteria…. even your own special screensaver!

I found a discussion about it over here. The designer wrote:

The point of the Microsoft Next-Gen PC competition is to push the boundaries of how you interface with the PC, the tech used, and to disrupt current ideas of what is possible. Theres more pages, visit coroflot.com/jasonfarsai for an exploded view and explanations of how it is possible… (in the future of course)

Nothing would ever evolve if people thought things were impossible. Its not an engineering project that needs to be manufactured tomorrow, its a design concept and if you can’t see that then you need to join us here in the future where anything is possible.

its simple, detachable bottom houses micro components/cpu (and makes it dishwasher safe), oled, touch sensitivity, insulation from hot beverages, wireless RF charging… but again, a blue-sky concept usually cannot be made yet. Its already disrupting which means I did my job.

And if you like the concept, it’s a finalist for the Microsoft Next Gen PC competition: You can click on Vote and vote for it. I already did!

While it’s not available yet, wow, I’ll be the first one in line to snap one up…. :)

In a Flash - to your iPhone and iPod that is!

Here’s a great rumor from GearLive:

…. We’ve been waiting for Flash support to hit the iPhone ever since…well…it launched. We’ve had to make do without Flash for almost eight months, and YouTube even had to convert a bunch of their catalog to H.264 in order for the service to be enjoyed on the iPhone. Well, we’ve just got word from a reliable source that Flash support is on its way to the iPhone, and it should be coming very, very soon. Speculating a bit further on our own, we are guessing that it would be pretty convenient for Flash support to be introduced alongside the iPhone SDK, wouldn’t you say? Now, we know that there isn’t much information here, but you also know how strong our sources are too - Flash on the iPhone is coming, just take our word for it, okay?

EDIT: We already have had a couple people ask about the supposed battery and CPU issues that were holding Flash back from being included on the iPhone in the first place. From what I am hearing, it was a complete fabrication. Flash has not yet made it to the iPhone solely due to business negotiations. As we said, it is now on its way…MORE…

Sounds intriguing!

It does a nice job of upconverting my normal DVDs to my Sony Bravia television. That being said, there are a couple negatives: 1. No HDMI in… so unless you run this through an HDMI switcher, if you only have one HDMI in on your TV, you’re screwed! I have a PS3 and this system, and they don’t play nice together. 2. Techorate your home even if you’re geekless

Are you a techorator?

I didn’t think so. :) But check out this interesting article:

…New consumer research shows that when people first unwrap and plug in new consumer electronics, 70 percent don’t know how to make these sleek pieces of technology fit into their home décor.[1]

Celebrity interior designer Doug Wilson is working with LG Electronics to help consumers by offering tips and ideas on how to “techorate” their homes by melding innovative consumer electronics with interior design. Techorate is a term coined by LG Electronics that refers to the integration of technology into the overall decorative theme of a home.

Wilson, perhaps best known for showcasing his design expertise on TLC’s “Trading Spaces,” is working with LG Electronics as the first official “Techorator” to develop consumer tips and tricks to guide them through the techorating process.

“The television has become the hearth of the 21st Century, but I’ve seen people struggle with the basics…. MORE….

Coffees and iPhones and Laptops (and Starbucks and tracking your usage and …) oh my!

It sounds perfect

at first glance - imbibe your coffee creation at Starbucks, hook into their free Wi-Fi, power up your laptop, sync up your iPhone, and enjoy 2 free hours of simultaneous portable device usage (ie, working when really, you should be relaxing).

But is that really all? To wit:

…you’ll be able to use two different Wi-Fi-enabled devices simultaneously during a single two-hour session at Starbucks.

The bright side is that while you are syncing your schedule and e-mail on your iPhone (AT&T, which will provide the Wi-Fi, is the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the U.S.), you can also surf the Web or compose an e-mail on your laptop at the same time.

The down side is that once you log-in to your free AT&T Wi-Fi account with one device, the clock starts ticking…and doesn’t stop even if you logout one or both devices/computers. Two consecutive hours per day, that’s it….MORE…

How will StarBucks keep track of your usage, I wonder?

If you plan on using the service, you should ensure your WiFi connection is secure, of course. Here are some resources for that:
