D2B Wii - missing some pins is it? Here’s the fix to mod

If you’re fond of souping up

your Wii, you might notice something missing in the D2B model. Apparently some of the pins have been cut, preventing the easy install of a mod chip (’course, this is nothing new - such things were reported in 2007). To wit:

…There are two technique for installing a mod chip in these systems, you can simply solder the small stub back onto the pad where it should go. Or you can grind away some of the top of the chip so that you can solder to the wires that are located in the chip.

“Here is how I handle these cut chips without grinding…

* Strip some 30gauge wire and flux it and tin it really well.
* Apply flux to the cut area on the chip.
* Steadily hold the wire vertically so that the wire makes contact with the solder pad on the board and the stub where the leg was cut.
* Apply your iron on the wire pressing it onto the stub/chip.
* Cut extra wire, install mod chip as normal and test.
* Once verified as working apply some hot glue just to make sure nothing moves.”…MORE…

Kinda makes me wish I had paid more attention in shop class (do they even have those nowadays?).

Secret iPhone Tricks and Tips

So you have your brand new

shiny iPhone, and you want to turbo power your experiences with it! What can you really do?

Here are some of the best resources online:

  1. Two finger tap to zoom out in Google map. Most people know of the 1 finger tap to zoom in on the Google map. Try it with 2 fingers and it’ll reverse that process. Any two fingers would do, but I highly recommend index + middle fingers, it just works better, trust me.
  2. Jump to top of a web page in Safari browser. When you get to the bottom of a long web page in the browser, you can tap the top of the screen, right under the time and it’ll bring you back to top of the page. I’m not aware of a way to jump to bottom of the page yet. If you do, share with moi :-)
  3. Don’t need to type .com in Safari browser. When you’re typing an URL, no need to type http://www or the .com portion. Simply enter the doman (e.g. apple) and click “Go”. Of course, this only applies to .com URLs.
  4. Quick hover for numbers in keyboard. How do you type a number today? Click on “@123″ to change to number keyboard, type a number, then click on “ABC” to change back? Say you just want to enter a number in between your alphabets? Try this trick.

Hover on “@123″ and the keyboard will switch to number keyboard, don’t let go of your finger, hover over to the number or symbol you want, then let go. It’ll insert the number or symbol and switch you back to the alphabet keyboard….MORE…

And don’t forget:

Disable your iPhone if it gets stolen

This posting can be

quite a timesaver (if your phone uses the GSM standard):

…To check your Mobile Phone’s IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity), key in the following digits on your phone: *#06# and the IMEI 15-digit code will appear on the screen or check it in Settings/About/IMEI or it is imprinted on the back of your iPhone. This IMEI number is unique to your iPhone. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

If your iPhone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the the thief changes the SIM Card, your iPhone will be totally useless…MORE….

A good thing to know!

iPhone Denial of Service (DOS) attacks - would YOU know what to do?

The one thing

you don’t want your iPhone to experience is anything bad.

Well now, duh. But let’s take that concept a bit further - what if it was disabled? If you couldn’t use it? If your $400 critical communication device was SOL????

Believe it or not, it could happen. To wit:

… McAfee Avert Labs Blogger Jimmy Shah identified a Denial of Service vulnerability in the iPhone’s Safari browser in a blog post on Wednesday.

“The researchers who found the vulnerability were looking for a method to unlock the filesystem on iPhones with the latest firmware (1.1.3). Unlocking the file system allows the installing of custom ringtones and third party applications. With the last firmware version you could automatically unlock your iPhone by visiting a particular website with the Mobile Safari browser,” Shah wrote.

The DoS vulnerability can be exploited by visiting the proof of concept page and clicking a button that will launch a warning and the exploit code will run. The iPhone is then unresponsive before rebooting a less than a minute later, Shah wrote.

“The DoS bug exploit is partially based on JavaScript code from the Month of Browser Bugs(MOBB). During the MOBB a group of security researchers released an exploit for a web browser vulnerability every single day. While the original exploit was targeted at desktop browsers, the modified version simply attempts to fill memory and crash the phone,”….MORE…..

Giant Robot, I Need You! Johnny Sokko Returns, 40 year anniversary!

Long long ago

back before the earth’s crust cooled, back before The Iron Giant, back before The Transformers, back before….well, a long long time ago, there was Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot.

I grew up on this show, and was just reminded of it by this interesting eBay goodie:

Giant Robot*RARE Giant Robot Remote Controlled Johnny Sokko*

This is a supremely rare edition of Remote Controlled Giant Robot. The set comes with a wrist-watch type controller (not very realistic though) and a 14-inch multi-function GR figure. The figure features 1) light in the eyes and sound effect when pressing the chest of robot; 2) Walking motion or sliding motion; 3) Finger missile launching (light and sound) with lifted arms. The figure takes four AA batteries whilst the controller takes two AAA batteries. Batteries for the controller are not included. All instructions are in Japanese but absolutely no problem for any adults. Great item for GR fans to celebrate the 40th Anniversary.

Stand aside, Optimus Prime! How on earth can you compete with:

….Though I admittedly have little knowledge in the genre of Japanese sci-fi, I do know one thing: when a UFO crashes into the ocean near Tokyo, chances are pretty good that an attack on the city by a giant monster is inherent. Call it intuition.Meanwhile, on a boat not too far away, we meet Johnny Sokko, a young boy on his way to…well, we’re not told where he’s off to. But that really doesn’t matter, now does it? Johnny, while on deck peering out over the sea, meets Jerry Mano. It takes approximately three minutes of small talk between the two for Jerry to blow his cover and disclose that he is really a secret agent for an outfit called UNICORN. How does Johnny cleverly uncover this valuable piece of information about Jerry? In a brilliant battle of wits, Johnny asks, “So, what do you do?” To which Jerry replies, “I’m a secret agent for UNICORN…oops, I mean I’m a writer, ”

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

Then, to add credibility to his writer story, Jerry immediately gets on his futuristic cell phone (at least in the film it’s supposed to be futuristic, in reality it looked like a car antennae) and reports in to his boss back at UNICORN headquarters. I guess subtlety isn’t a prerequisite for being a secret agent…..MORE….

Okay true, perhaps I’m thinking about Giant Robo, but hey…the memories are still as sweet. :)

The Game - activated by your brain, Emotiv is coming!

I’m sure you remember the Star Trek

TNG episode in which Wesley is the only person not to be seduced by a game that operates via brain waves?

Well, it’s coming along sooner than you’d think! To wit:

The next video game controller you use might be between your ears. A start-up company called Emotiv Systems has developed a helmet-like headset that, it says, lets users control game characters with their thoughts.

The device looks like something used for heavy-duty orthodontics, and it comes with receptors that read activity among the brain’s neurons. The player then teaches the device’s software to associate thought patterns with commands. According to the game news blog Kotaku, which got an early look, players could push and pull an object by willing it so or scare spirits away with a grimace.

Due out this year, Emotiv’s device offers one of the more far-out views of what the future of the gaming industry could look like….MORE….

Now if that isn’t just plain cool, I don’t know what is.

Enhanced iPhone 512 Terabyte with a head touch - put 10,000 songs on your iPhone

So appropriate for Friday!

But if you really want to put 10,000 songs on your iPhone, check this out:

I bought an iPhone and I’m pretty happy with it but there’s one problem: it’s too small to hold my entire iTunes library. I’m already using my Mac as a web server and I’m usually home or somewhere with wireless access so I figured ot a way to have all of my songs available to me at all times. I don’t have much time right this second to give a lot of detail so I’ll give a quick overview of what I’m doing and flesh it out later. .

This is pretty simple if you’re already familiar with running a PHP-enabled web server on your Mac. Standard disclaimers apply: if you get your machine hacked because you’re running a public websever, or if the RIAA learns that you’ve got all your music in a world-viewable directory, or if your ISP cuts you off for doing this, it’s not my fault.

Even if you don’t have a world-accessible server, you can still use this to make your music available on your wireless LAN at home or work. Just go to your computer’s LAN IP address instead of a regular URL. (Note that iPhones won’t recognize Rendezvous/Bonjour names. I think. I haven’t actually tested, but I haven’t heard that they do.) (Update: I was right, the iPhone didn’t come with Rendezvous/BonjourZeroConf of any sort, but that has been added in the 1.1.1 update. I don’t know if it’s in iPod touch’s or not; if it isn’t, I’m sure it will be soon. This also means that trailing slashes (see below) aren’t essential when browsing on your local network; however, they’re still needed from the outside world and are a good thing to do in general.)

Basically, all I’m doing is making the iTunes music directory available to the web server….MORE….

In a Flash - to your iPhone and iPod that is!

Here’s a great rumor from GearLive:

…. We’ve been waiting for Flash support to hit the iPhone ever since…well…it launched. We’ve had to make do without Flash for almost eight months, and YouTube even had to convert a bunch of their catalog to H.264 in order for the service to be enjoyed on the iPhone. Well, we’ve just got word from a reliable source that Flash support is on its way to the iPhone, and it should be coming very, very soon. Speculating a bit further on our own, we are guessing that it would be pretty convenient for Flash support to be introduced alongside the iPhone SDK, wouldn’t you say? Now, we know that there isn’t much information here, but you also know how strong our sources are too - Flash on the iPhone is coming, just take our word for it, okay?

EDIT: We already have had a couple people ask about the supposed battery and CPU issues that were holding Flash back from being included on the iPhone in the first place. From what I am hearing, it was a complete fabrication. Flash has not yet made it to the iPhone solely due to business negotiations. As we said, it is now on its way…MORE…

Sounds intriguing!
