Unlocking an iPhone in Canada - ultimate Canadian FAQ

Did you know:

An iPhone will work in Canada, but it needs to be unlocked. You CANNOT just pop in your SIM card for it to work. It must be unlocked to be used with Rogers or Fido (the only GSM networks in Canada). It will NOT work with Telus or Bell. That’s right…it will NOT work with Telus or Bell (they are CDMA networks)! …MORE…

Canada has a much different playing field when it comes to iPhones. Thus, the great peoples at iPhoneInCanada have put together a superFAQ like so:

  • Where can I buy an iPhone? I want one soooo bad! What features will work?
  • How Do I Go Abouts Buying an iPhone in the USA? Will I have to sign a contract? What about firmware? Will I have to pay taxes/duties on my iPhone?
  • I have my iPhone. Now what? (love the answer: Your iPhone needs to be “activated”, “jailbreaked”, and “unlocked” (check out what all this terminology means here). New iPhones are running 1.1.2 and 1.1.3. Follow the guide posted about using ZiPhone. Unlocking should take less than 3 minutes if you follow the instructions correctly!)
  • What are these “SIM” solutions I keep hearing about?
  • Should I update my iPhone’s firmware? I want to update to 1.1.1/1.1.2/1.1.3!
  • How do I use my iPhone with Rogers or Fido?
  • When is the iPhone being released in Canada?
  • Will my iPhone be affected if/when Rogers/Fido comes out with the iPhone? Will anything change?
  • How do I setup EDGE settings on my iPhone?
  • I’ve unlocked my iPhone! Yes! I need a case to protect my new investment. Any suggestions?
  • How do I download 3rd party applications to my iPhone?
  • I want to become an iPhone “Yoda”…can you show me the ways?
  • MORE!

Definitely the above is a good read.

ThankYouVeryMuch!

Power of the Internet and retracted rumors - iPhone 1.1.4 was just a hoax

It was too good

to be true, I tell you.

Kelly from Tiny Code admitted that he lied. To wit:

It’s finally time I just come out and say it; I lied.

Tiny-Code never had any relations with Apple, Inc. or any other division of Apple. Never had the new firmware or any pre-SDK pack. Certainly never signed any NDA.

I find it interesting that a simple joke on the front of a minor at best Installer.app repo can cause so many wakes.
It is equivocally funny that a simple re-enforcement of the page by me posted earlier stating I had been “reprimanded” by Apple could throw it even more into believability.
To top it all off, a simple redirection of the domain to Apple’s iPhone Developer center would cause so many theories as to why that is so when it was to just stop the “where did it go” questions.

All of it should teach everyone at these rumor sites WWWide to not trust anything that did NOT come from the mouth of Apple.
8 lines of text were published on Friday, by Sunday those lines of text are one of the biggest talked about and debated lines of text across Apple related internet sites.

This goes to prove anyone can register a domain one week and less than two later be believed, talked about, debated over, defended, ratted on, bashed, requested to be interviewed on DowJones Newswire and everything else under the sun. The power of the internet is amazing…MORE….

DIEphone - Prevent iPhone Theft Tips

You know, iPhones

and PDAs and ABCs and XYZs and … you get the idea, truly make life far more convenient (so long as you don’t become a slave to them, of course…anyone remember this articl, I was the iPhone’s Love Slave?). You can reach anyone, be reached at a moment’s notice, program in your passwords and

EEEEEK! Stop RIGHT THERE!

Did you realize that if you program in your passwords and then see your iPhone waft off in the hands of a pickpocket, you’ve just given away your identity complete with auto-access?

60 Seconds just blogged about this very thing. To wit:

…I guess that’s why I also hate spammers. They take without ceremony. They steal the bandwidth to do their dirty work, and they steal the recipient’s mental or physical property. From crimes against property, to embezzlement, larceny, looting, robbery, shoplifting, and fraud (theft by deception) — they’re all dishonorable and deserve punishment.

My son’s iPhone was stolen just a month after he got it. It had become one of his prized possessions. It was probably his own fault — using the phone in a crowded public place, showing it off to friends — laying it down on the bar for just a moment. But look at the misery that thief caused. The thief got a useless device, once the account was cancelled. Perhaps he could sell it on the black market for a couple hundred bucks. But the victim suffered far more than the thief gained.

In the police investigation in Ft. Lauderdale, they said that there’s a wave of iPhone thefts not just in the city but nation-wide. Just like the wave of iPod thefts, the crooks target people using devices that are popular and trendy. The incident followed a well known and widely used technique: distract the victim, grab the phone, disappear in the crowd. It’s a sad note on society, and….MORE….

Scary.

There are ways to prevent your iPhone from being turned to the Dark Side, of course, you should:

  • Keep it with you at all times. Are you at a bar or party? If so, don’t take out your iPhone in public - there are professional pickpocketers who will work in tandem. One will distract you, the other will zero in on the iPhone you had so blatantly displayed before.
  • Don’t keep it clipped in view. Want to have your iphone conveniently clipped to your belt? DON’T. It’s easy to snatch off.
  • DO keep it clipped to something else. Or better yet, hide it in your pocket/bag.

‘Course, our intrepid readers have pointed out other great resources:

iPhone trick - use it in real time to keep track of business expenses with Google Docs

Money.

It’s a good thing.

Getting it back at tax time is even better.

Alas, therein lies the rub - you have to keep track of all your business expenses in order to achieve this nirvana. Filling your car up with gas, taking your customers out to lunch, buying that super-cool-Wii cutting-edge business entertainment software…keeping track of all those receipts is my personal view of Just a Little Bit of Hell.

But now you may fear not, gentle readers! For it was just reported at MacOSXhints that you can use your iPhone to enter in such crucial mind-numbing data into personalized spreadsheets created by, of course, Google Docs. To wit:

… To get started, go to Google Docs (sign-up if necessary), create a new spreadsheet. If you want, you can add a few columns with a header row to make things a little easier in the next step. Then, go to Share and invite yourself with the ‘to fill out a form’ option. You’ll then be able to configure your form. Here you can add or delete fields, re-order them, and set each field to ‘text,’ ‘paragraph-text,’ ‘multiple-choice,’ ‘checkboxes,’ or ‘choose from a list’ (with the choices, where applicable). You can also set defaults in some cases, and add simple instructions.

You’ll receive an email with the form embedded, but there’s also a link to a web page version of the same form. On your iPhone, click this link from your email (or import this link via Safari). Once it is open in Safari, scale it to fit better on the screen, then press the + at the bottom of the screen and add the page to your home screen.

Now, whenever I fill my tank or make a business expense, I simply press the button on my iPhone, then fill in the form, and press Submit. All results appear in my spreadsheet. It appends a new row for each submission. I’ve also set up the spreadsheet to automatically take averages, or compute other figures from the submitted data….MORE…

Here’s some more resources about Google Docs:

Thus, now you can keep track of critical information in real time. What more could you want (except possibly an iPhone that contains a Mercedes)? :)

ThankYouVeryMuch!

Boost your iPhone with this MacGyverism - Scotch Tape!

Picture the following:

You finally have that iPhone you utterly crave. The sun is shining, the birdies are mooing, the cows are tweeting, and life is joyous UNTIL you are plagued, PLAGUED I say, but poor reception, dropped calls, and other ickies more irritating than a systems administrator being asked:

It says Strike Any Key when ready but I can’t find the ANY Key!

Oh no! A horror! But wait! Thanks to some intrepid brave souls, it’s been discovered that Scotch Tape can fling itself to your rescue. To wit:

… Rooted in the notion that improper SIM contact can result in a weak signal, we’ve now received reports that attaching a small piece of scotch tape to the outer side of the iPhone’s SIM card (the side that does not have metal contacts) can result in a surprising boost.

iPhone Atlas reader Jeggrey Swiger recently wrote:

“I found that a small piece of scotch tape under the SIM Card had put enough pressure on the Contact to give a great increase in signal strength.”

We certainly can’t recommend this procedure, as it might void your iPhone’s warranty. But if you’ve already cleaned debris and made sure your SIM card is properly seated, a piece of scotch tape may very well provide the added pressure needed for proper contact and a strong signal…..MORE….

MacgyverWhat a cool idea! MacGyver would certainly approve.

Another way to boost your iPhone strength is to follow the instructions at:

And if you’re looking for a classic list of MacGyverisms, enjoy:

Can YOU get better than:

  • Lit cigarette with hidden laser

  • Used binocular eyepiece to catch laser beam
