Enhanced iPhone 512 Terabyte with a head touch - put 10,000 songs on your iPhone

So appropriate for Friday!

But if you really want to put 10,000 songs on your iPhone, check this out:

I bought an iPhone and I’m pretty happy with it but there’s one problem: it’s too small to hold my entire iTunes library. I’m already using my Mac as a web server and I’m usually home or somewhere with wireless access so I figured ot a way to have all of my songs available to me at all times. I don’t have much time right this second to give a lot of detail so I’ll give a quick overview of what I’m doing and flesh it out later. .

This is pretty simple if you’re already familiar with running a PHP-enabled web server on your Mac. Standard disclaimers apply: if you get your machine hacked because you’re running a public websever, or if the RIAA learns that you’ve got all your music in a world-viewable directory, or if your ISP cuts you off for doing this, it’s not my fault.

Even if you don’t have a world-accessible server, you can still use this to make your music available on your wireless LAN at home or work. Just go to your computer’s LAN IP address instead of a regular URL. (Note that iPhones won’t recognize Rendezvous/Bonjour names. I think. I haven’t actually tested, but I haven’t heard that they do.) (Update: I was right, the iPhone didn’t come with Rendezvous/BonjourZeroConf of any sort, but that has been added in the 1.1.1 update. I don’t know if it’s in iPod touch’s or not; if it isn’t, I’m sure it will be soon. This also means that trailing slashes (see below) aren’t essential when browsing on your local network; however, they’re still needed from the outside world and are a good thing to do in general.)

Basically, all I’m doing is making the iTunes music directory available to the web server….MORE….

DIEphone - Prevent iPhone Theft Tips

You know, iPhones
and PDAs and ABCs and XYZs and … you get the idea, truly make life far more convenient (so long as you don’t become a slave to them, of course…anyone remember this articl, I was the iPhone’s Love Slave?). You can reach anyone, be reached at a moment’s notice, program in your passwords and

EEEEEK! Stop RIGHT THERE!

Did you realize that if you program in your passwords and then see your iPhone waft off in the hands of a pickpocket, you’ve just given away your identity complete with auto-access?

60 Seconds just blogged about this very thing. To wit:

…I guess that’s why I also hate spammers. They take without ceremony. They steal the bandwidth to do their dirty work, and they steal the recipient’s mental or physical property. From crimes against property, to embezzlement, larceny, looting, robbery, shoplifting, and fraud (theft by deception) — they’re all dishonorable and deserve punishment.

My son’s iPhone was stolen just a month after he got it. It had become one of his prized possessions. It was probably his own fault — using the phone in a crowded public place, showing it off to friends — laying it down on the bar for just a moment. But look at the misery that thief caused. The thief got a useless device, once the account was cancelled. Perhaps he could sell it on the black market for a couple hundred bucks. But the victim suffered far more than the thief gained.

In the police investigation in Ft. Lauderdale, they said that there’s a wave of iPhone thefts not just in the city but nation-wide. Just like the wave of iPod thefts, the crooks target people using devices that are popular and trendy. The incident followed a well known and widely used technique: distract the victim, grab the phone, disappear in the crowd. It’s a sad note on society, and….MORE….

Scary.

There are ways to prevent your iPhone from being turned to the Dark Side, of course, you should:

  • Keep it with you at all times. Are you at a bar or party? If so, don’t take out your iPhone in public - there are professional pickpocketers who will work in tandem. One will distract you, the other will zero in on the iPhone you had so blatantly displayed before.
  • Don’t keep it clipped in view. Want to have your iphone conveniently clipped to your belt? DON’T. It’s easy to snatch off.
  • DO keep it clipped to something else. Or better yet, hide it in your pocket/bag.

Working Out? Wireless Earbuds at the Gym

Morning,
So….picture the following. You’re at the gym and you’re ready to rock and you dashingly install your earphones in your, well, ears, and boldly stride to perform you incredibly dynamic workout when….your earbud wires get caught on the elliptical or in the Smith Machine or….you get the idea.

After you re-attach your flapping earlobes, you ask yourself -gee, why am I still bothering with wires?

Why indeed. While rather expensive, you can go the wireless ear bud route at the gym! Here are some cool places that discuss them

Looks like it will be quite awhile before the prices reach what mortal men generally consider fair. But still, if you’re constantly getting all tied up with your headphone/earbud wires at the gym, it might be a wise future investment.

Got an iPhone, want to unlock it?

iPhones have to be the coolest things around. And of course, being able to hack it to shreds is only one of the neatest tricks you can do with it. :)
Gizmodo just reported a way to unlock the iPhone 1.1.3 firmware. To wit:

A new software-based iPhone 1.1.3 firmware unlock has been claimed by GeoHot. Don’t expect a one-click solution like AnySIM or IPSF: it requires some hackertastic command line voodoo-juju, so it’s not apt for mere mortals. Also, be warned that it hasn’t been tested yet for secondary effects and may require a rabies shot before trying. At least, judging from the venom against the iPhone Dev and Elite teams:….MORE…

There are lots of other iphone unlock resources online, including:

When you unlock your iPhone, you can run them on other cell networks. So if that’s of interest, do explore the above resources and see what you can achieve.
